  • AP: Harley-Davidson seeks to expand overseas

"MILWAUKEE - With its foray into China under way and an eye toward boosting sales overseas, Harley-Davidson is looking to sell its iconic motorcycles in India and Vietnam. Representatives from the company recently traveled to both countries to meet with government officials, said Tim Hoelter, Harley's vice president of government affairs. The Milwaukee-based company is working with U.S. officials to lessen what Harley sees as two major barriers to entering India — stringent emissions standards and tariffs of more than 90 percent. Vietnam recently agreed to end its outright ban on large motorcycles and lessen its tariffs more than 60 percent over the coming years, as part of a trade pact with the United States, he said."

  • GazetteExtra: HOG reaches 1 million members

"The Milwaukee-based company formed its owner's group in 1983 to satisfy rider demand. It reached the half million membership mark in late 1999 and surpassed 1 million earlier this year, spokeswoman Leslie Hudson said. The members are spread out in 130 countries in more than 1,400 chapters, which must be affiliated with dealers. Anyone who owns a Harley is eligible for membership, she said. Passengers, often family members, can be associate members."
