BUELL XBRR PRODUCTION BEGINS

"Buell Motorcycle Company announced today that the production of XBRR race bikes, based on the Firebolt XB12R, has begun. A total of 50 XBRRs will be built in the production run. Buell announced last month that XBRR production had been delayed as engineers analyzed and refined components based on what was learned from the XBRR’s AMA Formula Xtreme racing debut at the Daytona 200 in March. Redesigned parts include new driveline components and a new timing trigger wheel, as well as a switch from a high-contact to a coarse-pitch 5th gear, according to Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. A larger oil cooler was also developed for the XBRR."

"We had the privilege to read and review a new book published by Open Court Publishing called "Harley Davidson and Philosophy - Full Throttle Aristotle". The title caught my attention right off the bat. Aristotle is not a name that comes up much while hanging out at the local bike shop, especially not in conjunction with the name Harley Davidson! So I dove right in. And came to a grinding halt! I was faced with one thing I don't find interesting in a story, any story. Statistics and obscure references to books I'm not likely to ever read. Was I doomed to going to the library and come home with saddle bags full of books I would need just to understand this one? That's not fun! But then something happened as I continued reading. I figured I would look up the references later if I had to, and started looking at the underlying ideas and details of the writings. Reading the words and the "story" instead of trying to grasp the various theories and multiple references to philosophy. It was a conscious effort to "suspend disbelief" as the magicians (and Walt Disney) tell us! But it was worth it. "

I am to the point where i refuse to tell people i even own a motorcycle, and i really wish that people would take the time to learn what the fuck a chopper actually is before using the term non stop. A chopper means the biek was "chopped" it does note mean it has long forks and a fat rear tire. if your frame has not been cut or welded on, if your gas tank was not streched or beaten to shape, if your fenders were not radiused or cut, than i got news for ya. its nto a chopper. you may have a custom bike but its not a chopper, you dont have to have long forks to be a chopper, you can be a little short bike and still be a choppper, or as people are growing so fond of now callin them a "bobber" I recenty listned to a conversatioin between two guys about a "Chopper" on the street. Now dont get me wrong im all for all the hype on tv, its in many ways good for the whole industry, but in many ways is painful as well. I mean jesse james, billy lane, russel mitchell, these guys are bike builders, these guys build choppers. orange couhnty bolts bikes together, they dont build bikes and there is a huge differance, and just so everyone knows i dont give a fuck what anyone tells you, a bike can not be built in 30 days. ... "

Reuters: Harley-Davidson opens first China dealership

"BEIJING (Reuters) - U.S. motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson Inc. (HDI.N: Quote, Profile, Research) opened its first authorized dealership in China on Saturday amid hopes its rumbling bikes will strike a chord with wealthy Chinese. But the Wisconsin-based company has acknowledged ownership curbs on motorbikes in most Chinese cities could mean a slow journey in the fast growing nation. "We're taking a long-term market perspective with China," David Foley, who oversees the firm's China operations, told Reuters Television on the sidelines of an opening ceremony. "We're going to be focusing on developing our brand here and continuing to develop the distribution and the dealer network," he said. The new dealership would sell a variety of Harley models, offer training for would-be bikers and organize events, Harley said in a statement. Harley, whose bikes have become an icon in America, first unveiled plans to set up the Beijing dealership last month. The company has said its long-term China strategy is to address riding restrictions over time and to help develop a leisure-oriented motorbike market as consumer buying grows." A closed-circuit TV camera keeps an eye on the parking lot outside. Inside the mess is Rafaelle Proctor, owner and proprietor of the garage, which goes by the name of Artistic Creations. Short, curly hair and an ever-smiling face. He's wearing a blue garage uniform, his name stitched on the breast. He's sketching on an artist's pad.

"Nicolas Chauvin started down the customizing road at the early age of 14. Having seen the movie, Easy Rider, he turned his attention to his 50cc motorcycle and customized it. At the age of 20 he graduated from The School of Paris Art. Upon graduation, Chauvin entered the advertising agency world doing work as an airbrush illustrator. While creative, the work was not what Nicolas was drawn to, so he stepped into bike building with the passion it deserved. Working from his shop, Nicolas Chauvin Designs, in Neuilly sous Clermont, France, Chauvin has fast made a name for himself in the custom bike world. " I just did the Old School bit and rode this bike to Sturgis on our Bikernet.com 2005 run from the West Coast. I cottoned to the pure machine marquee. I didn’t plan to paint it at all, unless absolutely necessary. I wanted to leave most components unblemished metals and incorporate as many iron types (for color) into the mix as possible. I wanted this mess to contain brass, copper, aluminum, steel, and stainless. Of course the steel corrosion dilemma dictated that we use some powder coating for a protective seal. The front end came in black to avoid chrome, so I supplemented the bike with a few additional black pieces, but the frame and some others were powdered to mimic a copper patina. Some aluminum parts were clear coated to prevent complete dulling and afford an acceptable pin striping surface. Some brushwork was applied. "

That topic has been buzzing around the internet with the discovery of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) documents mentioning a 2450cc V-twin engine. With Harley now running at the bottom of the big-twin displacement class, it's only a matter of time before Harley, which was once distinguished by having the largest motorcycle engines on the road, produces a bigger V-twin. The EPA emissions document in question (scroll down to the last three pages, 8 through 10, of this PDF) shows testing results for liquid-cooled 2450cc and 2000cc Harley-Davidson V-twin engines. Power for the 2450cc version is listed as 98 kilowatts (131 horsepower) at 5000 rpm with 133 newton-meters (98 foot-pounds) of torque at 3500 rpm. The weight (presumably the GVWR) is listed at 1260 pounds. Since the fuel-tank material is listed as nylon, it would presumably be an under-seat style. "Charlotte, N.C.- February 11. The Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show Tour came to the Queens' City on a very cold day. I t was as cold as six feet up a well digger's behind. The rain started coming down around four o'clock in the morning. When I arrived at the convention center, it was still raining and cold. It sure felt good to go inside the warm convention center. The only motorcycles that I saw that day was inside of Charlotte Convention Center. Everyone was talking about when the bike show comes to Charlotte it usually snows. For the last three years the snow storms hit about the same time as the bike show was scheduled. I had to leave my motorcycle at home. I decided I had to make the trip in my warm pick-up truck. I might be a die-hard biker but when the weathermen call for snow and freezing rain, I always head for my truck and turn on the heat. This was another road trip that got buried in the snow."

I rode to Harold’s Bar and stumbled through the door into the dank biker saloon. “Sheila, I’m becalmed is a sea of treachery,” I slurred. “I need a pot of rum to fill my sails.” ... He handled all aspects of the build this bike including welding, but not the sheet metal fabrication. “Dylan is the master,” Brad said. With Russell’s input they powder coated all the sheet metal and the frame black chrome with a satin clear finish. It took him 50 hours to complete the bike working week days after work until midnight and half-days on Saturday. That Saturday afternoon it fired to life and so did Brad."

New this year is Harley-Davidson’s participation at three different locations (Ocean Center, Daytona International Speedway and Destination Daytona), events at the Ocean Center early in the week and new activities in the Ocean Center indoor show.

Official Harley-Davidson events at the Ocean Center Arena will run from March 6-11. Highlights include the Harley-Davidson and Buell indoor show (March 7-10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), the annual Ride-In Show Contest (March 8), the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Live Auction (March 10) and MDA Bike Raffle (March 11). There will also be a H.O.G. and BRAG new product reception on March 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and H.O.G. and BRAG hospitality areas during regular show hours.

MILWAUKEE (February 20, 2006) - Harley-Davidson Motor Company announces its new Great Roads interactive web tool now live in the Experience section of www.harley-davidson.com. The Great Roads tool encourages riders to explore the country on their motorcycles, and enables enthusiasts to rate and review 20 of the nation's scenic byways. Riders have the capability to expand their motorcycle experiences with the aid of the Great Roads web tool by finding new routes and reading personal reviews from fellow enthusiasts who have ridden and rated the areas. Each Great Road listing includes types of scenery and road characteristics - whether the roads are twisty, or if the area is flat or mountainous. It also provides essential travel information for motorcyclists, such as whether there are adequate gas stops, how much traffic to expect and the best time of year to ride the route.

Maps of the Great Roads can be customized for a rider's individual needs using a convenient link to the Harley-Davidson Ride Planner. Great Roads included in the web tool also offer details on local Harley-Davidson dealers in that area, and several offer suggestions for lodging that can be booked through a travel specialist. The Great Roads web tool provides links to other enthusiast services including Authorized Rentals and Tours and Harley-Davidson Shipping. These services help riders overcome constraints such as time and weather to expand their riding and touring opportunities. To rate and review a Great Road, enthusiasts need to create a Harley-Davidson user profile at www.harley-davidson.com , and then link to Great Roads page under the Experience section.

"As the first in Europe living bike builder, Marcus Walz, owner of WALZ HARDCORE CYCLES Germany, was choosed to be part of Discovery Channels successful TV-show "The great Biker Build-Off 5 ". Marcus is the first non American bike builder (with exception of Russ Mitchel who lives in California) who was invited to this show by the producer Hugh King himself.Marcus "rival" in this show will be Mike Prugh of Legend Air-Rides. As with the previous "Biker Build-Offs," each builder will be given two weeks to create a custom motorcycle, from the ground up. Although aesthetics are crucial to all the builds, the contest also requires the bikes to work; the builders must ride them as far as 1,000 miles to major bike events, where attendees vote for their favorite."
